FAIR USE, FIRST USE AND PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES: MANAGING COPYRIGHT AND ELECTRONIC RESERVES Linderman 300 Recent actions by publishers have moved the copyright issue front and center for many university libraries. Is educational fair use all or nothing, or can we stake out a reasonable middle ground? Can we distinguish between fair and not-fair, and can we make those distinctions practically and efficiently in our daily work? This presentation will discuss these issues and how they've impacted our procedures at Penn State. Percentage limits, first time and repeated use, and the Copyright Clearance Center will also be discussed.
SIRSIDYNIX: SYMPHONY SAAS INFORMATION Linderman 400 Information session by SirsiDynix on Software as a Service
2:30pm - 3:30pm SERIALS MODULE SHARING SESSION Linderman 200
SETTING UP AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY IN SECOND LIFE Linderman 300 Since January 2008, I have been involved in an initiative of our College of Humanities & Social Sciences to investigate using Second Life for teaching & learning. They built us a library building, and I have assembled a variety of links to our online resources. Just this week, we had a photo shoot that was 'attended' by avatars of people from around the world, as well as a freshman English class.
PRESENTING A UNIFIED INTERFACE TO PATRONS FROM DISPARATE SYSTEMS Linderman 400 In order to present patrons a unified interface to various library service units and systems, Penn State created a working group to examine practices and policies such as notices, bills and explanatory text. This session will discuss changes implemented by the group. It is common for libraries to have separate systems for circulation, interlibrary loan and even consortial borrowing. These systems may be located in different library units and have varying policies and practices which can be confusing and frustrating for patrons. At Penn State, patrons can place a hold via the Sirsi Unicorn catalog on a book located at another campus library and have that delivered to their pickup location; they can request a book from the PALCI consortium E-ZBorrow system; or they can place a request from the interlibrary loan request management system ILLiad. E-ZBorrow integrates with Sirsi unicorn, but ILLiad does not. Staff in Lending Services are responsible for Sirsi Unicorn and E-ZBorrow, whereas ILLiad is in the Interlibrary Loan unit. Although a patron may order a book through ILLiad, ILL staff may place a hold on a book at another campus or order it through E-ZBorrow. Penn State has taken steps to unify practices and create a more seamless experience for the patron.

9:00am - 10:00am COOL AND CREATIVE WAYS FOR SMALL LIBRARIES (AND SMALL STAFFS) TO PROMOTE THE OPAC Linderman 200 We’ll look at simple and creative projects that even small libraries can do to promote their OPAC. Examples will include ways to use tools available in your ILS as well as some easy Web 2.0 tools.
REPLACEMENT ISSUES: A DIFFERENT USE OF CLAIM REPORTS Linderman 400 Rutgers University Libraries has a unique workflow for replacement issues. Due to the centralized nature of RUL’s serials acquisitions management, we have had to find convenient ways to manage many functions. Utilizing the SIRSI claim and report functions, Rutgers has implemented a process for replacements to help identify, track, and order missing journal issues. Part of this process includes the maintenance of a replacement order database and a desiderata file. I would like to present on this unique use of the claim and report functions and how it is used in this workflow.
10:00am - 10:30am Break Lucy's Cafe @ Linderman Library
10:30am - 11:30am DEVELOPING THE LIBRARIES APPLICATION FOR FACEBOOK Linderman 200 70% of students at Penn State’s University Park campus log on to Facebook at least once a day, with 93% of students having a Facebook account. The Facebook platform provides an opportunity for institutions of higher education to leverage the environment that students are already using to communicate and collaborate. In September, 2007, the Libraries and ETS launched the first Penn State application within Facebook - allowing students to access the CAT and databases within the Facebook platform. Presentation will include discussion of the development process, how we integrated our catalog search and results display, what we've learned and what we have planned for the application. The development of customized tools within Facebook increases the usability of Facebook, expanding the capabilities beyond just a social networking tool, and making it a more versatile tool for working with students. By developing tools within Facebook, you are building on the existing social networks, enabling groups to form around not only interests, but also needs and activities. This could in turn lead to more interaction among the participants, enriching the learning experience, increasing retention of the subject matter, and increasing academic satisfaction. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the Facebook platform, programming for Facebook, integrating the catalog search and results within Facebook and the role of Facebook in teaching and learning.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE (MANAGING UNICORN IN A LARGE, MULTI-CAMPUS INSTITUTION) Linderman 400 Sure, we have a sysadmin (or two). But beyond that, who else is involved in managing Unicorn in a large, multi-campus institution with 24x7 operations? What is Sirsi Steer? What do the Sirsi Expert Teams do? And then there is the Unicorn Operations group. How does it all fit together? This presentation will discuss the model used at Penn State University where approximately 40 individuals from the Libraries and IT are involved in managing Unicorn. Hear what works and what doesn't, who is updating policies, and who has the final word.
11:30am - 1:00pm Lunch University Center - Asa Packer Room
1:00pm - 2:00pm USING OCLC CONNEXION WITH SMARTPORT & DISCUSSION Linderman 200 Catalogers at libraries which have Sirsi as their ILS may prefer to do their actual cataloging and editing of bibliographic MARC records on Connextion Client, and then "smartport" the records into Sirsi. The reasons may include keeping a "legacy" OCLC code (my reason), easier ability to work with diacritics, validation of authorities, constant data, and simply convenience of having Sirsi control number which is the same as OCLC record number. This presentation will give detailed instructions how to set up both Connexion and Sirsi, so that cataloged MARC records saved in the former can be easily exported to the latter (i.e. imported into Workflows). Following this presentation, the floor will be open for discussion of other methods of importing records from OCLC, other vendors, etc.
"HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE COLLECTIONS AGENCIES" AND AN EXAMPLE OF A LIBRARY THAT DOESN'T CHARGE FINES Linderman 300 As unpaid library fines continued to mount, it became clear that the University Libraries at the Pennsylvania State University had to do something to reduce this ever increasing amount. The Libraries took several actions. The most far reaching of these actions was the use of a collections agency to collect fines from former student and resident borrowers who were responsible for a significant percentage of the unpaid bills. We decided to select Unique National Collections which acts as the collection agency for over 850 libraries in several countries. Since that time, the Libraries have used the services of Unique to improve the recovery of Library material and fines. Following this presentation, Lehigh will discuss how their libraries made a policy change from charging library fines to charging no library fines. Gail Kriebel, Team Leader of the Lending Services Team, will explain how this decision was made, how it was implemented and how it is working.
Tracking User Trends via Director's Station Linderman 400 an overview of the OPAC, Checkout, Cataloging, User, Holds, and Reserve Modules
2:15pm - 3:15pm CATALOG MODULE SHARING SESSION Linderman 200
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU CLICK "I WANT IT" Linderman 400 Using WF GL3.1, Penn State University libraries fill and deliver patron requests to almost 30 different PSU library pick-up locations. This presentation will focus on how the Penn State main campus library annually handles over 65,000 individual patron requests. Follow the flow of work from the time the patron uses the online catalog to request the material, to the report and notices, and through the different twists, turns, and problems the request might take until the requested material is in the patron hand. This discussion will only briefly touch on the Inter-Library Loan part of the process.
3:15pm - 3:45pm Lucy's Cafe @ Linderman Library Break Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries
3:45pm - 4:45pm VUFIND AND UNICORN Linderman 200 Includes a brief overview of VuFind, what it is, what it offers, how it works. We show the demo from VuFind's site and from Lehigh's and Drew's test sites. We then discuss some of the technical issues involved in getting VuFind to talk to Unicorn for item- and callnum-level information. Discussion will also include the group of interested Sirsi sysadmins that is starting to coalesce. We then will suggest possible ways of moving forward, getting more VuFind functionality to work with Unicorn and also discuss open-source development issues.
TOO MANY GRAND SPACES IN A 19TH-CENTURY LIBRARY: TRANSFORMATION AT LINDERMAN LIBRARY Linderman 400 Lehigh University completed the renovation of Linderman Library, its 1878 humanities and special collections library, in March 2007. Eighteen months later, it has a story to tell: from concept planning to moving 250,000 books and 14 staff out of the building to reopening this cherished campus treasure.
